Minneapolis doesn't have a lot of bands like Spiritual Mansions - bands that favor big (soft) rock choruses, bands that flaunt their classically trained pianist, bands that write good pop songs. Singer and main songwriter Ryan Harris has a definite vision: mix some electric Bob Dylan with a strained Richard Hell-esque croon and some pop-indebted psych-rock revivalism. Oh, throw in some of The Zombies backing vocals too. The rest of the band - Mark Hanson on drums, Anthony Schaefer on bass, Joel Roberts on lead guitar and Sam Harvey-Carlson on keys - are pretty much the best at what they do, which is the terribly underrated task of sounding like a band.

When Harris sings his tortured-by-lovely-women tales, the band rocks suitably. "The sun is my passion," Harris sings on "What Did I Tell You," and appropriately, the songs on Gives Us Your Hearts are full of the kind of AM radio sunshine pop that Big Star nicked so well. And like Big Star, Spiritual Mansions' buoyant pop is belied by Harris' bitter breakup ballads. The themes are universal: true love, loneliness and emotional detachment. And like the best pop, this is both windows-down-on-a-summer-day and curled-up-under-your-sheets approved. On "The Tumbler," Harris asks: "What do you know about love? / What do you want to learn about it?" Listening to Give Us Your Hearts, I realized love's a bitch, but oh, so beautiful.
